The String follows the story of Malik (Antonin Stahly Viswanadhan) who was born and raised in Tunisia by his parents Abdelaziz (Lofti Dziri), a wealthy North African and Sara (Claudia Cardinale), a French woman. At the start of the film Malik is living in Paris and has a successful career as an architect. However when his father dies unexpectedly, Malik must return to Tunisia to take care of his mother. He has a lot to deal with on his return: he is still processing the loss of his father and is unable to come out as a gay man to his mother. All the anxieties he suffered in childhood have come back to the surface.
Malik’s problems appear to lessen when he finds solace in the handsome handyman Bilal (Salim Kechlouche) who is working on his mother’s estate. Although Malik’s father was aware of his son’s sexuality, his mother has never been able to accept it and so is traumatised when she accidentally discovers the two men in bed together.
“Fascinating, beautifully shot and well acted from a director to watch.”
