Gay Essential Films To Watch, You and the Night (Les rencontres d’après minuit)

You and the Night follows a young couple and their transvestite maid as they prepare to host an orgy.  They invite specific guests to take part in the event, each playing key roles in the evening: The Slut, The Teen, The Stud, and The Star.  Before the orgy can begin, everyone agrees that they need to take some time to get to know each other.

Each guest narrates their own story, displayed through provocative flashbacks and time sequences.  Gradually, the pretences each guest hides behind begin to dissolve, with each story appearing more amazing, fantastical, and at times, unbelievable, than the prior.  Once all of the guests have shared their bizarre and incredible stories, the hosts tell a tale of immortality and love, and a passion that surpasses death.  Inspired, the orgy begins and all of those involved soon discover fantasy and reality combine in an unforgettable experience.

Underscoring the entire film is an amazing soundtrack provided by M83.  Electric, innovative licks add to the sensuality and excitement of the film.

You And The Night

“Like a sexed-up version of TS Eliot’s The Cocktail Party”
   Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

“This alternately sensuous and silly pastiche suggests director Yann Gonzalez may be the next Almodovar or Ozon”
   Peter Debruge, Variety

“Even after the credits have rolled – it takes you a good while to snap back into reality.”
Dominic Mill, We Got This Covered

Did You Know?

Playing the role of The Stud in You and the Night is former Manchester United football player Eric Cantona.  Affectionately known by football fans as “King Eric,” Cantona retired in 1997 and began his career in cinema, starring alongside Cate Blanchett in the film, Elizabeth.  Cantona was an obvious choice for director Yann Gonzalez.  Gonzalez himself comes from a family of footballers, and is a fan of the sport.
