In the genre of romantic comedy, Heartbeats follows the story of two friends Francis (Xavier Dolan) and Marie (Monia Chokri) who both fall for the same man. Having met Nicolas (Niels Schneider) at a dinner party, the three of them become close friends, meeting often and sometimes sleeping in the same bed.
However, Francis and Marie’s feelings go beyond friendship and they begin to compete for Nicolas’ affections. When the three friends go on a holiday to Nicolas’ mother’s vacation home, Marie becomes jealous and decides to leave, however it is actually Nicolas who is not impressed by their behaviour and he is the one who leaves. When Francis and Marie return home, they do not see Nicolas but leave him messages including a love letter from Marie.
When Nicolas does meet up with Francis, Francis tells him that he loves him but doesn’t get the response he wanted. When Marie sees Nicolas in the street she pretends the love letter was to a female friend leaving Nicolas to believe she has a female lover, so she tells the truth to no avail.
Francis and Marie become friends again and once again set out looking for love. Nicolas has now moved away to Asia.
“Xavier Dolan is back with another madly stylish Montreal-made delight.”
— Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
“Far from being a liability, Dolan’s youthfulness gives it unmistakable vibrancy: This is a love-crazy, movie-crazy affair, laying bare its emotions just as plainly as its influences. ”
— Scott Tobias, The A.V. Club
“Delightful and insightful romantic comedy.”
— Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal
