Teenage Kicks is an intense coming of age tale set in Australia, exploring various themes: from guilt and forgiveness to identity and sense of responsibility, from friendship and youthful dreams to of course sexual awakening and experimenting. It’s the emotional journey of a teenager on the cusp of his 18th birthday, whose world is turned upside down when his older brother dies in an accident. Directed by Craig Boreham, the film stars Miles Szanto, Daniel Webber and Anni Finsterer.
I was thinking about making a more universal coming of age story that explored sexual awakening but ultimately the story for me is a lot about coming to terms with grief and loss. I thought that aspect of losing someone important to you was an element that everyone could relate to one way or another.
