In John Cameron Mitchell’s 2001 film, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Michael Pitt delivers an incredible performance as the loved and hated character Tommy Gnosis. Tommy is rock star touring the United States, whose tour happens to coincide with Hedwig, a transgender singer from East Berlin. Hedwig primarily plays small seafood restaurants, using the venues to tell her tragic life story in song. Tommy Gnosis becomes infatuated with Hedwig, which leads the two to develop a relationship as they are on tour. This relationship, however, is short-lived, as Tommy ultimately leaves Hedwig and steals all of her best songs in the process.
Michael Carmen Pitt was born on April 10th, 1981 in West Orange, New Jersey. A talented actor, Pitt often finds himself in roles that are troubled or bizarre. The actor happened upon his first acting gig while walking in New York. A casting agent approached Pitt, whom Pitt mistook for a police officer. The agent recommended Pitt for a role in the then-popular televisions series, Dawson’s Creek, which led to a recurring role for the actor.
Pitt’s break into film was as the character of Tommy Gnosis, the lover of transgender Hedwig in the 2001 film Hedwig and the Angry Inch. This performance led to additional supporting roles in many popular films before Pitt ultimately returned to television.
A man of many talents, Pitt is an accomplished musician, singer, and is currently a model of men’s clothing for the Italian fashion powerhouse, Prada. Pitt is the front man and guitarist for his band, Pagoda.
After appearing in 15 episodes of the television series Dawson’s Creek, Michael Pitt broke into film with his supporting roles in Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Bully. His performances led to major bookings, including films like The Dreamers, The Village, and Murder by Numbers.
In 2005’s Last Days, Pitt displayed his musical talents by playing a rock star inspired by Kurt Cobain. The performance led to further roles in films such as Delirious, Silk, and Funny Games, for which he won a Best Supporting Actor award.
Pitt recently returned to television, taking on the role of Jimmy Darmody in the popular award-winning series, Boardwalk Empire. Pitt currently has 4 films in production and filming, to be released in the near future.
