Essential Film Stars, Joseph Gordon-Levitt

In the Dutch-American drama, Mysterious Skin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the role of a teenage Neil McCormick.  As children, Neil and his friend Brian Lackey were sexually abused by their baseball coach.  A young and naïve Neil mistakes these activities as normal sexual activity, partially misinterpreting the actions due to his homosexual proclivity.  By age fifteen, Neil becomes a male prostitute and begins selling his body in New York City.  Neil is eventually tricked into giving a man a ride home, ending in Neil being raped and beaten.

Brian, on the other hand, has blocked out memories of their baseball coach and withdrawn socially.  Years later Brian discovers a photograph of the boys playing baseball and recalls his old friend Neil.  The two young men finally reunite, forming a bond with each other and finally bringing some closure to their painful past.

Born February 17, 1981, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was raised in a Jewish family in Los Angeles, CA.  Inspired by his maternal grandfather, the famous movie director Michael Gordon, Joseph was drawn to acting and film at an early age.  As a child actor, Joseph Gordon-Levitt appeared in many television commercials and shorts before landing his breakout role in the television series 3rd Rock from the Sun, starring alongside John Lithgow.

After picking up a few smaller movie roles in the 1990’s, Joseph Gordon-Levitt paused his career in order to attend Columbia University.  Following graduation, Joseph Gordon-Levitt began to pick up a variety of lead roles in the 2000’s, earning much critical acclaim.

Gordon-Levitt is also the founder of hitRECord, a music and media collaborative where anyone is welcome to download and remix records.  hitRECord features over 300,000 members, many of whom have produced records, media, and presented new productions at major film festivals.

Known for his charming, boyish looks, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has delighted audiences in a wide variety of roles.  Beginning as the younger son in the hit TV series 3rd Rock from the Sun, Gordon-Levitt soon established himself with roles in A River Runs Through It, Angels in the Outfield, and 10 Things I Hate About You, which also starred the late Heath Ledger.

Following 2004’s Mysterious Skin Gordon-Levitt began to establish himself as a leading man in films such as Stop-Loss and the Golden Globe nominated performance in (500) Days of Summer.  In recent years Gordon-Levitt has taken on more edgy roles, which have stretched his abilities, including 2012’s Looper, where he portrays a young Bruce Willis and had to spend days studying the talented actor.  Gordon-Levitt also appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, as well as Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated Lincoln.
