Essential Film Festivals, SICILIA QUEER Filmfest

Hotel Plaza Opéra

The SICILIA QUEER filmfest returns this May with an incredible collection of gay themed films.  One of the most unique film festivals in the Mediterranean, SICILIA QUEER is open May 25th – 31st in Palermo, Sicily, with a wide selection of juried films, shorts, and features.  This year’s festival also offers a stunning assortment of LGBT themed biographies.

Among this year’s films is the charming and witty biographical comedy, Eisenstein in Guanajuato.  The film follows world-renowned filmmaker Eisenstein as he rides his success in European cinema across the Atlantic Ocean in an effort to break into the American film industry.  Rejected by Hollywood, Eisenstein finds himself in Mexico, producing an underground film funded by pro-Communist Americans.

Another biography takes a more dramatic approach.  Saint Laurent paints an accurate picture of the life of famous fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, during the peak of his career in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.  And finally the moving film, Je suis Annemarie Schwarzenbach, is centred around a casting call for a production about Swiss writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach.  As each actress attempts to emulate the writer, intimate memories and perspectives on her life are presented.
