Essential Film Festivals Rio de Janeiro: Rio Festival Gay De Cinema

Rio Festival Gay De Cinema is an annual event, which in 2014 will be held between 3rd and 13th July. Gay Films will be screened in 1&2 Caixa Cultural and Federal Justice Cultural Centre in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Gay Films screened include short and full length films along with documentaries. This year’s highlights include: Newcastle, an Australian drama film from Dan Castle, about a young surfer living in the shadow of his older brother; Eleven Men Out, an Icelandic comedy drama about a football team from director Robert I. Douglas; Plata Quemada, Marcelo Pineyro’s Argentinian action thriller detailing the true story of a 1965 bank robbery in Buenos Aires; São Paulo Em Hi-Fi, a Brazilian documentary from Lufe Steffen looking at gay night life through the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s; What’s The T, a Filipino documentary from director Cecilio Asuncion exploring the lives of five transgender women; and Out in the Line-UP, an Australian Film from Director Ian Thomson about two gay surfers.

Rio de Janeiro is renowned as a fantastic gay-friendly destination, if not the best gay hotspot in the world.  The main gay area in the city is Farme de Amoedo. At the end of this street is one of the world’s best gay beaches, part of the Ipanema Beach.

Rio held it first gay pride parade in 1995 and the annual event is the largest of its kind in Brazil. The Week is a famous venue for the LGBT community, with five bars and a fantastic waterside location.  OO is one of the best gay clubs in Rio and best visited on a Thursday or Sunday.

Rio is also home to the largest and most famous Art Décor statue in the world: Christ the Redeemer Corcovado Mountain.
